Word Analysis & Fluency

Aligned to RF.4.3 — Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.

What this lesson teaches

Even strong readers meet long academic words in science and history. Break them into roots and affixes to read and understand them, and reread tricky parts so your reading stays smooth.

Worked example

The word 'unbreakable' is 'un-' (not) + 'break' + '-able' (able to be), so it means not able to be broken. Knowing the parts unlocks the meaning.

Practice questions

  1. Break 'disagreement' into its word parts and define it.
  2. Reread a hard paragraph aloud until it flows.
  3. What does the root 'port' mean in 'transport' and 'portable'?
