What this lesson teaches
Correct capitalization, punctuation, and spelling make your writing easy to read. Capitalize names and the start of sentences, use commas and end marks in the right spots, and spell words carefully — checking a dictionary when unsure.
Worked examples
Example 1
The messy line 'on friday we visited austin texas and boston' becomes correct as 'On Friday, we visited Austin, Texas, and Boston.' with capitals and commas in place.
Example 2
'my brother said i dont want to go' becomes 'My brother said, “I don’t want to go.”' — a comma, quotation marks, and the apostrophe in don't.
Example 3
A comma splice joins two sentences with only a comma: 'It was late, we went home.' Use a period or 'so' instead.
Practice questions
- Write a sentence with two proper names and capitalize them correctly.
- Add the missing commas to: 'I packed apples oranges and grapes.'
- Explain one place you can check if a word is spelled right.

Mayúsculas, Comas, Ortografía
El uso correcto de las mayúsculas, la puntuación y la ortografía hacen que tu escritura sea fácil de leer. Usa mayúscula en los nombres y al empezar una oración, coloca las comas y los puntos en el lugar correcto, y escribe las palabras con cuidado — revisando un diccionario cuando dudes.
Ejemplo 1: La línea desordenada 'el viernes visitamos monterrey nuevo león y puebla' queda correcta como 'El viernes visitamos Monterrey, Nuevo León, y Puebla.' con mayúsculas y comas en su lugar.
Ejemplo 2: 'mi hermano dijo no quiero ir' se vuelve 'Mi hermano dijo: —No quiero ir.' — dos puntos y raya de diálogo.
Ejemplo 3: Dos oraciones no se unen solo con coma: 'Era tarde, nos fuimos a casa.' Usa punto o 'así que'.
