What this lesson teaches
Some weather can be dangerous, like floods, lightning, and strong storms. People use science to design things that reduce the harm, such as lightning rods, walls to hold back floodwater, and storm shutters.
Worked examples
Example 1
A tall building could be struck by lightning, but a metal lightning rod on the roof safely carries the electricity down into the ground. A town near a river builds a levee, a strong wall, to keep flood water out of homes.
Example 2
A house in a tornado area has a reinforced safe room with no windows, so the family has somewhere to go.
Example 3
Storm drains carry heavy rain off streets before it floods them. A hazard is easier to manage when you plan for it in advance.
