Reading with Fluency

Aligned to RF.2.4 — Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.

What this lesson teaches

Fluent reading is smooth, accurate, and expressive — like talking. Reading at the right speed helps you understand what you read.

Worked example

Reading 'The dog barked loudly!' with excitement, not word-by-word, shows fluency and helps the meaning come through.

Practice questions

  1. Read a sentence smoothly, then read it again with feeling.
  2. Why does reading too fast or too slow make it hard to understand?
  3. Practice a sentence until it sounds like talking.
