What this lesson teaches
After World War II, the United States and the Soviet Union became rival superpowers in a decades-long standoff called the Cold War. American policy aimed to contain the spread of communism through alliances, foreign aid, an arms race, and a race to space, while fear of communism also shaped life at home.
Worked example
In 1962, U.S. spy planes discovered Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba; during the thirteen-day Cuban Missile Crisis, President Kennedy blockaded the island and the world came closer to nuclear war than at any other time before the Soviets agreed to remove the missiles.
