Modern Economic Systems Compared
Aligned to C3.D2.Eco.1 — C3 Framework for Social Studies State Standards.
What this lesson teaches
Economic systems answer one basic question: who decides what to produce and who gets it? Under capitalism, private owners and markets decide; under communism, the state owns the means of production and plans the economy; socialism sits between them, with government providing key services while markets still operate.
Worked example
During the Cold War, divided Berlin showed both systems side by side: capitalist West Berlin filled with shops and imported goods, while communist East Berlin ran state-owned stores where citizens waited years to buy a car.
Practice questions
- Name the three economic systems compared in this lesson.
- Explain one key difference between capitalism and communism.
