Comparative Government and Political Ideologies

What this lesson teaches
Governments differ mainly in who holds power and how far that power extends. In a democracy, citizens choose their leaders through free elections and rights limit the state; under authoritarianism, a single ruler or small group holds power without meaningful consent, and ideologies such as liberalism, conservatism, and fascism offer competing visions of how society should be organized.
Worked example
In 1994, South Africans of every race waited in lines that stretched for miles to vote in the country's first free election, choosing Nelson Mandela and ending decades of white-minority authoritarian rule.
